Two young men died and two others survived after gunfire Friday evening in the 2800 block of Ellicott Drive.
BALTIMORE — Homicide detectives are investigating a Friday evening shooting in West Baltimore that killed an 18-year-old and a 19-year-old and wounded two other young men, with police yet to announce an arrest or publicly identify a suspect.
Officers were sent to the 2800 block of Ellicott Drive around 5:15 p.m. after reports of gunfire, according to police accounts reported by multiple Baltimore news organizations. They found the 18-year-old suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Medical personnel pronounced him dead at the scene.
Police learned a short time later that three additional shooting victims had arrived at an area hospital. They were 19, 21 and 22 years old. The 19-year-old died despite medical treatment, while the two older victims survived and were listed in stable condition. Police had not publicly released the victims’ names as of Saturday evening.
Investigators have disclosed little about the circumstances leading to the shooting. Authorities had not announced a motive, identified a suspected shooter or said how many people may have fired weapons. CBS Baltimore reported that more than 20 rounds were fired near Ellicott Drive and Oakhurst Place, based on its review of police dispatch audio. The same report said officers recovered a firearm at the scene. Police had not publicly detailed what role, if any, that weapon played in the shooting.
The investigation is unfolding as the surrounding area recovers from another multiple-victim shooting less than a week earlier. On Oct. 3, officers responding to the 1200 block of North Franklintown Road, near Leon Day Park, found 12-year-old Khloe Ishway and a 25-year-old woman with gunshot wounds. Two wounded men later arrived at hospitals, and another woman subsequently sought treatment for a graze wound. Ishway died at a hospital.
Police said the Oct. 3 shooting followed a dispute involving a parking space. Detectives later arrested 23-year-old Tyree Reynolds of Baltimore and charged him with first-degree murder in Ishway’s death. Police said Reynolds was among those wounded in that shooting. The charge is an allegation, and Reynolds is presumed innocent unless proven guilty. Detectives have said they continue to seek a second suspect in that case.
The Ellicott Drive shooting occurred roughly within walking distance of Leon Day Park, making it the second multiple-victim shooting in that part of Baltimore in less than a week. Police have not said the two cases are connected. The proximity, however, has placed the latest investigation under heightened attention after vigils and public mourning for Ishway during the previous week.
Authorities have not publicly explained whether the four men shot Friday were together before the gunfire, whether they were targeted or whether investigators believe more than one shooter was involved. Those unanswered questions remain central as detectives reconstruct the events surrounding the shooting.
The differing ways the victims were located are also part of the investigative timeline. The 18-year-old was found at the shooting scene, while the other three men arrived at a hospital shortly afterward. Investigators routinely use witness accounts, physical evidence and other available records to establish what happened before and after a shooting, but police have not disclosed what evidence they have gathered in this case beyond information reported from the scene.
As of the latest available update Saturday night, homicide detectives were still seeking information and no arrest had been announced. Police had not released the identities of the two young men who died or provided additional information about the surviving victims beyond their ages and conditions.
