The attack killed a man and woman and critically wounded two others outside a South Halsted gas station.
CHICAGO, Ill. — Friends and neighbors in Auburn Gresham were grieving Thursday after a shooting outside a gas station killed two people and left two others critically wounded.
The attack unfolded about 12:23 a.m. in the 7600 block of South Halsted Street. Chicago police said four gunmen approached four people standing outside and opened fire before running away through an alley. Detectives had not announced arrests or a motive.
The people killed were a 53-year-old woman and a 46-year-old man, police said. Both were taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where they died. A 35-year-old woman and a 33-year-old man were also taken to the hospital in critical condition with multiple gunshot wounds.
One resident, who did not want to appear on camera, said his friend was among the dead. He said the man was known for jokes and a bright personality. Another friend said the victim was “always chasing his money” and was in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Police marked evidence across the ground outside the station as detectives worked through the scene. Surveillance video showed someone approaching two men before the shooting began. Police had not said whether the video identified any suspects.
The shooting shook an area that one violence interrupter described as recently peaceful. Reality Allah said he was surprised by the size of the attack because there had not been much visible conflict nearby.
The investigation remained with Area Two detectives. Police said the four suspects fled on foot, and no other injuries were reported.
