Food Delivery Turns Into Gun Battle on Memphis Roadway

Police have not determined what triggered the Winchester Road confrontation, and no charges had been announced after one person was detained.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis police are investigating conflicting accounts of a roadway confrontation in Whitehaven that ended with two men shot Wednesday night, including one who was hospitalized in critical condition.

Officers responded at about 8:45 p.m. Oct. 7 to the area of the 3300 block of Winbrook Drive, where they found two wounded men. Both were taken to a hospital. Police said one victim was in critical condition while the other suffered injuries that were not considered critical. One man was detained after the shooting, but authorities had not announced any charges in the latest available reports.

The investigation centers in part on what happened between the victims’ truck and a red four-door sedan before shots were fired along Winchester Road. Police have not publicly confirmed a motive or determined whether a traffic dispute caused the shooting.

One victim told Memphis police that the person driving the red sedan swerved in front of the truck and began brake-checking it. According to that account, the sedan later moved into the right lane before someone fired multiple shots toward the truck.

A witness described the beginning of the encounter differently. The witness said the victims’ truck appeared to accidentally swerve in front of the red sedan. The two vehicles then reportedly moved in front of each other several times before the sedan pulled alongside the truck and gunfire followed.

The different accounts leave an important part of the investigation unresolved. Police had not said whether video, physical evidence or additional witness statements had established which vehicle made the first roadway maneuver. Authorities also had not identified who they believe fired the shots.

Witnesses reported hearing about 10 gunshots. Local reporting said the driver of the truck was struck in the jaw and another man in the vehicle was struck in the leg. A girlfriend of one of the victims told investigators that the men had been making DoorDash deliveries that night. Police had not independently confirmed their work status or released their names.

The man detained after the shooting had not been publicly identified, and police had not explained whether he was considered a suspect, witness or person of interest. No charges related to the shooting were reported, and authorities had not identified the people said to have been inside the red sedan.

The unresolved sequence of events remains central to the case because police have stopped short of publicly describing the shooting as road rage or assigning responsibility for the traffic confrontation. Witness comments have raised that possibility, but investigators had not announced a finding about what prompted the gunfire.

Memphis police said the investigation was continuing. As of Friday, authorities had not released additional information about possible suspects, charges or the condition of the critically injured victim, leaving investigators to reconcile the competing accounts of how the encounter began.
