Florida driver kills child walking to school with mother

TAMPA, FL – In a tragic event on Sheldon Road, a family’s morning routine turned into a nightmare when a vehicle struck them in a crosswalk. The incident unfolded as a mother and her two children were walking to school, with the pedestrian signal in their favor.

A 77-year-old driver in a green Dodge pickup failed to see the family while turning from Moore Road onto Sheldon Road. Authorities received the call at 7:38 a.m., and deputies arrived swiftly, providing first aid. Hillsborough County Fire Rescue transported the injured to St. Joseph’s Hospital.

The 45-year-old mother and her 10-year-old son suffered injuries but are expected to recover. Tragically, her six-year-old daughter, Rosalangela Sagundo Osario, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver was also hospitalized for evaluation and has been cited for failing to yield the right of way, resulting in a $1,000 fine and a six-month license suspension.

Sheriff Chad Chronister expressed his heartfelt condolences, emphasizing that such accidents can often be prevented. He urged drivers to remain undistracted and vigilant, particularly during times when pedestrian activity is high.

This tragedy highlights the critical need for road safety, especially in areas where families and children are present. While the investigation is ongoing, initial reports indicate that speed was not a contributing factor.

Officials confirmed that the family was correctly using the crosswalk, and although the driver had a green light, the responsibility to yield to pedestrians is crucial.

As the community grieves, authorities continue to stress the importance of attentive driving to prevent further tragedies. The sheriff’s office calls on all drivers to keep safety at the forefront and remain alert in high-traffic areas.
