KERR COUNTY, Texas — A severe storm system unleashed heavy rainfall across central Texas, resulting in flash flooding that has claimed multiple lives and forced emergency rescues. Search and rescue teams navigated treacherous waters Friday, deploying boats to assist those in danger as the Guadalupe River overflowed, endangering nearby communities and cherished wildlife habitats.
The confirmed rainfall in Kerr County reached up to 10 inches within just a few hours. The surge caused a dramatic rise in the Guadalupe River, which climbed over 22 feet in approximately two hours, according to meteorologist Bob Fogarty from the National Weather Service’s Austin/San Antonio office. The river gauge in Hunt, a community on the river’s banks, indicated the water level had surpassed 29.5 feet, leading experts to believe it had risen even higher, rendering the gauge itself submerged.
In response to the unfolding crisis, Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced that state resources would be mobilized to assist affected areas, including Kerrville, Ingram, and Hunt. “I urge Texans to heed guidance from state and local officials and monitor forecasts closely to avoid driving into flooded areas,” Abbott stated.
As the storm wreaked havoc in Kerr County, Texas Game Wardens reported that rescue efforts were underway across the region. Authorities warned that the swift-moving waters could catch individuals off guard, emphasizing the necessity of caution in flood-prone areas.
The severe weather’s impact was felt beyond Texas, extending to central New Jersey, where strong thunderstorms have been linked to three fatalities, including two men in Plainfield. These individuals lost their lives when a tree fell onto the vehicle they were traveling in during the storm. The local mayor expressed condolences, calling the incident a sobering reminder of nature’s power and the fragility of life. Plans for the city’s Fourth of July festivities were subsequently canceled as the community sought to regroup after the “deep scars and widespread damage” left by the storm.
Throughout southern New England, residents experienced widespread outages and downed trees, with reports of large hail affecting several communities. In addition, reports indicated hazardous driving conditions in northeastern Connecticut as vehicles struggled to navigate slick roads.
