Five Dead as ‘Flesh-Eating’ Bacteria Strikes Louisiana Waters

Scientists have documented a northward expansion of dangerous Vibrio infections as warming reshapes the bacterium’s seasonal range.

BATON ROUGE, La. — Five deaths from Vibrio vulnificus in Louisiana this year are drawing renewed attention to a bacterium that flourishes in warm coastal water and has been appearing across a wider part of the United States as temperatures rise.

Louisiana had reported nine Vibrio vulnificus cases as of Aug. 5, with all nine patients hospitalized and five dead, according to state health officials. Every patient had an underlying health condition, and all nine infections involved wounds exposed to seawater. The toll is unusually high for the state at this point in the year. During the same period over the previous decade, Louisiana averaged seven cases and one death.

The bacterium has long been associated with the Gulf Coast, where warm temperatures and the mix of fresh and salt water create favorable conditions. Vibrio bacteria occur naturally in coastal environments and become more abundant as water warms, with most U.S. infections reported from May through October. Vibrio vulnificus can enter the body through an open wound exposed to salt or brackish water. It can also cause illness when people eat contaminated raw or undercooked shellfish, especially oysters.

Louisiana’s 2026 cases come against a longer-term change in where serious Vibrio vulnificus infections have been documented. A 2023 study published in Scientific Reports found a major increase in infections along the eastern United States from 1988 through 2018. Researchers reported that infections once rarely seen north of Georgia had become regularly documented as far north as the Philadelphia area by the end of the study period. The northern edge of reported infections shifted by roughly 30 miles per year on average.

The researchers linked the change to warming coastal waters and projected that the geographic range of infections could continue expanding under future warming scenarios. Their analysis found an eightfold rise in reported Vibrio vulnificus infections over the three decades studied. The scientists said warming is not the only factor influencing disease totals, pointing to an aging population and other demographic changes that can affect the number of people vulnerable to severe infection.

That distinction is important because exposure to Vibrio vulnificus does not carry the same risk for everyone. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says anyone can become infected, but people with liver disease, cancer, diabetes, HIV or weakened immune systems face greater danger of serious complications. All nine Louisiana patients identified in this year’s state tally had underlying health conditions. State officials have not released their names or detailed medical histories.

Vibrio vulnificus infections remain rare compared with many other infectious diseases, but severe cases can progress quickly. The CDC estimates that about 150 to 200 infections are reported nationally each year and that roughly one in five infected people die. Wound infections can cause redness, swelling, pain, warmth and discoloration and may develop into necrotizing fasciitis, which destroys tissue surrounding an infected wound. Bloodstream infections can lead to dangerously low blood pressure and other life-threatening complications.

Researchers and public health officials are also watching the effects of major coastal storms. Hurricanes can push salt and brackish water into communities, damage infrastructure and expose cuts or other wounds to floodwater. Clusters of Vibrio vulnificus infections have been documented after major hurricanes, adding another concern as coastal states prepare for severe weather during the same months when water temperatures favor the bacteria.

Florida has also recorded Vibrio vulnificus infections this summer, reporting 14 cases and two deaths when Louisiana’s increase was highlighted by health officials. Case counts fluctuate from year to year, and a single season cannot by itself establish a climate trend. The longer record, however, shows the bacterium’s potential range changing as coastal conditions warm, making infections relevant to communities beyond the Gulf Coast areas where the disease has historically been most common.

Louisiana health officials are continuing to monitor cases during the warm-water season. They have warned that wounds exposed to coastal water can provide an entry point for infection and that symptoms following such exposure require prompt medical evaluation. For researchers, the state’s unusually deadly 2026 tally is also a reminder that the conditions supporting Vibrio vulnificus are not fixed geographically and can shift as coastal environments change.
