Firefighter Charged with Felony Assault After Chasing Teens in ‘Ding-Dong-Ditch’ Prank Incident

Lighthouse Point, Florida — A firefighter from South Florida is facing significant legal trouble after allegedly confronting a group of teenagers in a violent incident tied to a doorbell prank. Alex Michael Lutz, a member of the Highland Beach Fire Rescue department, turned himself in to local authorities on Monday.

The altercation reportedly began on the night of November 23, around 9 p.m., when a group of teenagers, riding in a golf cart, engaged in a game of “ding-dong-ditch” at Lutz’s home on Northeast 24th Terrace. Witnesses say that the prank escalated dramatically when Lutz emerged from his residence wielding a baseball bat and began chasing the teenagers.

According to police reports, Lutz caught up with the group on Northeast 45th Street, where he allegedly struck both the golf cart and the teens themselves. Authorities indicated that surveillance footage captured the incident, showing the terrified teenagers as they screamed while Lutz threatened them, saying, “I will kill you.”

Investigators revealed that several teenagers sustained injuries, including dislocations, bruising, and swelling. Lutz’s mother was the first to alert police, stating that her son had chased after the kids following the prank. Later, Lutz’s father expressed concern about his son’s career, noting that Lutz valued his position at the fire department and was hesitant to engage further with law enforcement.

In total, Lutz faces serious charges: two counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and one count of criminal mischief. He appeared in court on Tuesday morning, where he was ordered to be held on a $35,000 bond. Should he be released, conditions include a ban on contact with the alleged victims and restrictions on possessing weapons or ammunition.

After posting bond later that day, Lutz had little to say to reporters, directing inquiries to his legal counsel. The Highland Beach Fire Rescue department has been contacted for comments regarding Lutz’s employment status following these developments.

As the case unfolds, it has drawn attention to issues of accountability and the responsibilities held by those in public service positions. Community members are left to grapple with the implications of this event, which has sparked discussions about appropriate responses to youthful antics in residential neighborhoods.
