Detroit, Michigan — The FBI thwarted a potentially violent attack inspired by ISIS just hours before Halloween, arresting multiple suspects allegedly planning an assault dubbed “pumpkin day.” This operation, executed in the early hours, was deemed essential in safeguarding public safety during the holiday weekend.
The investigation, which spanned several months, revolved around online communications within a chatroom where suspects discussed intentions to carry out an attack in the United States. Officials reported that an undercover FBI agent had infiltrated the group during the early planning stages, which proved crucial in gathering evidence.
Recent activities raised alarms when the suspects practiced firearms handling at a shooting range using AK-47s and other weapons. During this training, a reference to “pumpkin day” emerged, interpreted as a coded nod to Halloween, prompting investigators to take swift action to prevent potential violence.
“This morning, FBI agents successfully stopped a terrorist plot and detained multiple individuals in Michigan who were allegedly preparing for a violent act over the Halloween weekend,” said FBI Director Kash Patel. He praised the efforts of law enforcement personnel dedicated to protecting the homeland.
Raids occurred in suburban Detroit, where heavily armed teams from the FBI and Michigan State Police executed operations at multiple locations. During these searches, authorities recovered several legally owned firearms, along with computers and mobile devices relevant to the investigation.
According to law enforcement experts, this case is part of a broader inquiry into individuals communicating with each other domestically and possibly with overseas contacts linked to ISIS. Investigators emphasized the importance of ongoing monitoring and cooperation among agencies, which played a pivotal role in averting a potential attack.
At least two suspects have been arrested, while three others, including a 16-year-old, are under questioning. Discussions among group members reportedly included debates on whether to conduct the attack on Halloween or to delay for further planning.
Governor Gretchen Whitmer voiced her appreciation for law enforcement’s prompt actions. She stated that she was briefed on the situation and expressed gratitude for their commitment to ensuring the safety of Michigan residents. The FBI’s Detroit office confirmed that there currently poses no threat to public safety, reassuring local communities.
In addition, authorities are exploring connections between the detained suspects and Ammar Said, a 19-year-old former member of the Michigan Army National Guard who was arrested earlier this year for allegedly plotting a similar attack against a U.S. Army facility. Officials characterized the group as “home-grown radicals” with potential ties to international terrorist networks, underlining the ongoing risk of domestic extremism.
