The youngest child was 2 months old and was being held by the injured mother when gunfire erupted, according to court documents.
BOWIE, Md. — Six children were inside a Maryland home when authorities say an argument between their parents escalated into gunfire, leaving their mother critically injured and their father facing attempted murder and other charges.
The Aug. 20 shooting has left the 38-year-old woman hospitalized while the children are in the care of social services, according to FOX 5. Authorities say the youngest child, a 2-month-old infant, was in the mother’s arms when she was shot inside a bedroom at the family’s home in the 8500 block of Myrtle Avenue.
Bowie police were alerted shortly after 4:15 p.m. Thursday. One of the children called 911 and reported that the child’s mother had been shot by the child’s father, according to court documents cited by FOX 5. Police and emergency medical crews arrived within minutes and found the woman wounded in the bedroom.
First responders provided emergency treatment before taking her to a hospital in critical condition. WTOP reported that Bowie police described her injury as a gunshot wound to the upper body. FOX 5 later reported that she was on a respirator and that her mother had traveled from North Carolina to be with her.
The children range in age from 2 months to 16 years, according to FOX 5. Court documents described an argument between the adults over their inability to provide school supplies for the children as the new school year approached. Investigators allege that one child attempted to intervene as the dispute intensified.
Authorities allege Kimball Hinton, 41, then pulled a gun from his pocket and fired twice at his girlfriend. The woman was later found on the bedroom floor. Police have not released her name, and officials have not reported that any of the children suffered physical injuries in the shooting.
Police said Hinton was outside the residence when officers arrived and was arrested without incident. Court documents cited by FOX 5 say Hinton contacted police shortly after the child’s 911 call, acknowledged shooting the woman and told authorities that the firearm was in a mailbox. Investigators recovered a weapon they believe was used in the shooting.
Hinton has been charged with attempted murder, assault, reckless endangerment and firearms offenses. FOX 5 reported that police said he was legally prohibited from possessing a firearm because of previous convictions. The charges are allegations, and the case has not been adjudicated.
Bowie Deputy Police Chief Robert Liberati characterized the case as a domestic crime during a police briefing. He said investigators did not believe there was an outstanding threat to the public. Bowie police and the Prince George’s County State’s Attorney’s Office were continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
The shooting shifted the immediate focus from the family home to the woman’s medical care, the welfare of the six children and the criminal proceedings against Hinton. As of Saturday, the woman remained hospitalized in the latest publicly available reporting, while Hinton was being held without bond. FOX 5 reported that he was expected to return to court the following week.
