Portland, Oregon — A tragic series of collisions on Thursday morning has left one pedestrian dead and several others injured, highlighting the ongoing issue of traffic safety in the city. Curtis Palmer, the 60-year-old driver of a Ford Escape SUV involved in the incidents, succumbed to his injuries days later.
Emergency responders were dispatched shortly after 11:45 a.m. to Northeast Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, where they found a pedestrian, DaRon V. Craig, 49, deceased at the scene. Authorities reported that two separate crashes occurred along this busy thoroughfare, primarily near the Safeway supermarket. The initial investigation suggests that Palmer struck two pedestrians while veering onto the sidewalk and narrowly missed hitting a child.
Portland police emphasized there is no indication that the events were intentional. Kevin Allen, a public information officer with the department, indicated that while the circumstances remain unclear, they do not believe this to have been an attack. “We are still piecing together the full picture regarding how this happened,” he noted.
According to preliminary reports, Palmer’s vehicle traveled northbound when it first mounted the sidewalk just north of Northeast Jessup Street, striking pedestrians before wandering back into traffic. The SUV subsequently sideswiped a Hyundai and continued into oncoming traffic, colliding head-on with both a Buick sedan and a Toyota pickup before finally coming to a stop.
In total, the incident left one pedestrian dead, another seriously injured, and three vehicle occupants requiring hospitalization. Fortunately, the injuries of the second pedestrian have stabilized, and he is expected to survive.
Witnesses described the moment as harrowing, with one bystander recalling hearing the engine accelerate before the chaotic crashes unfolded. “It looked like he was intending to hit someone,” said Craig Rodgers, who saw the initial collision.
Palmer, who had two prosthetic legs, posed additional questions for investigators, including whether his physical condition might have contributed to the driving incident. The SUV itself appeared to be in standard condition with no unusual modifications to its driving capabilities.
As investigations continue, the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office is collaborating with police to determine the cause of the crashes and assess any potential legal violations. So far, no arrests have been made, nor have any citations been issued.
The collision marks a somber addition to Portland’s traffic safety challenges, being the 20th fatal crash of the year and the eighth involving a pedestrian. Local officials expressed concerns about the rising number of pedestrian-related incidents this year. “This is definitely one of the more significant crashes we’ve experienced in 2023,” Allen stated, reflecting on the troubling trend.
Community members, shaken by the tragic event, are left mourning the loss while pondering ways to enhance safety along the city’s busy roadways. The consequences of this devastating series of events serve as a reminder of the pressing need for increased awareness and preventive measures to safeguard pedestrians.
