Farmington Hills Grandmother Killed; Grandson Taken Into Custody

A prior mental health petition was reported in the background of the man accused in the fatal assault.

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. — Records showing a prior mental health petition are adding context to the investigation of a Farmington Hills man accused of killing his grandmother Tuesday morning.

The petition was filed in May 2023 out of Macomb County, according to records reported after the homicide. Police have not said whether that filing was connected to the fatal assault, and investigators have not released a motive.

Farmington Hills police said the violence unfolded around 7:40 a.m. June 30 at a home near Middlebelt Road and Northwestern Highway. Officers were sent to the home for a reported felonious assault in progress and a domestic assault complaint.

Police said the victim, a 78-year-old grandmother, lived in the home with two grandsons. When officers arrived, they found her unconscious with severe head injuries. She was moved from the home and treated before being taken to Corewell Hospital in Farmington Hills, where she died.

The suspect, described in reports as a man in his 30s, was inside a bedroom when police arrived. Chief John Piggott said officers tried to de-escalate the situation and persuade him to surrender. When that failed, police used pepper ball rounds through a bedroom window. The man then surrendered and was taken into custody without incident.

Piggott said investigators were still working to learn what sparked the assault. “Hopefully, there’s some physical evidence that can help us put together exactly what went on today,” he said. Police said the suspect had not provided many answers in the early stage of the investigation.

The case is being treated as a domestic violence-related homicide. Police said another grandson was inside the home during the incident but was not injured. The victim’s name had not been released, and no formal charges had been publicly announced in the latest reports.

Detectives were expected to rely on search warrants, medical findings and witness statements as they prepared the case for prosecutors. The next major step is a charging review, which would determine what counts the suspect may face.
