Police have not released a description of the driver accused of killing 26-year-old Tyler Sieber after a highway crash.
DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — The family of a 26-year-old man killed after a traffic dispute on Interstate 285 is asking witnesses to help police identify the driver who fled after the shooting.
Tyler Sieber was fatally shot late July 23 after two vehicles stopped near the Chamblee-Tucker Road and Buford Highway area, close to Spaghetti Junction. DeKalb County police have not announced an arrest or released a description of the suspected shooter or the vehicle involved.
The confrontation followed a collision involving a vehicle driven by Sieber’s father, Anton Sieber. The family said Tyler Sieber was traveling separately behind his father when another driver moved across lanes, struck Anton Sieber’s truck and caused it to spin through interstate traffic.
Anton Sieber said his son stopped to check on him before following the other vehicle. The family said Tyler Sieber wanted to photograph the vehicle and obtain information from the driver after the crash.
Police said the vehicles later stopped and both drivers got out. Investigators said the other driver pulled out a gun, shot Tyler Sieber and drove away. Early police reporting said Sieber followed the vehicle and rear-ended it before the drivers stopped.
The family provided a more detailed account in later interviews, saying Tyler Sieber approached the other vehicle to document damage and identify the driver. Anton Sieber said an argument followed before the other driver opened fire. The precise sequence remains part of the investigation.
Family members also said the driver left with Tyler Sieber’s cellphone. They said they and investigators tracked its signal until it stopped transmitting. Anton Sieber said only the phone case was found. Another family account said the phone had been broken and its pieces scattered, but authorities have not publicly detailed what evidence was recovered.
The shooting left the Sieber family grieving its only son. His mother, Christa Sieber, described the days after his death as a continuing nightmare. She remembered him as courageous and said he stepped into the dispute because he believed his father had been endangered.
Sieber’s younger sister, Brittney Sieber, said her brother included her in the interests he loved, including motorcycles, cars and video games. Family members described him as kind, lighthearted and attentive to people around him.
Investigators have not said whether traffic cameras, nearby surveillance systems or other recordings captured the collision, shooting or fleeing vehicle. The family has asked motorists who traveled through the area that night to review dash camera footage that might show the vehicle or driver.
DeKalb County police continue to investigate the shooting. Authorities have asked anyone with information or relevant video to contact the department or submit an anonymous tip through its mobile app. No suspect description had been publicly released as of Sunday.
