Family Argument Over Child’s Haircut Ends With Two Teens Dead

No arrests have been announced as detectives determine who fired during an altercation that left two teenagers dead and another man wounded.

MESQUITE, Texas — Mesquite police are working to determine who fired during an early Wednesday confrontation that killed two 18-year-old men and wounded a 20-year-old, with no arrests announced as the investigation continues.

The case began when officers were sent to a reported shooting at about 12:07 a.m. Oct. 14. Early information placed the gunfire in the 2800 block of Clearwater Drive, but investigators later determined the shooting actually occurred in the 2200 block of Amber Springs Drive.

Officers found two 18-year-old men in the roadway with gunshot wounds. Police immediately began lifesaving efforts, including CPR, before the men were taken to Baylor Hospital. Both later died. Authorities have withheld their identities pending notification procedures and have said the two were close but were not related by blood.

A third person, a 20-year-old man, went separately to a local emergency room with gunshot wounds. Police linked him to the same incident and said his injuries were not life-threatening. He was expected to receive further treatment at a Dallas-area hospital.

Police said preliminary evidence indicates a dispute involving family members became physical before firearms were produced and shots were fired. Mesquite Police Lt. Michael Kelly said the argument apparently began over a child’s haircut. Officials have described a broader group involved in the dispute that included relatives, in-laws, friends and a godparent.

Investigators have not publicly said who fired a weapon, how many people discharged firearms or how many guns were involved. Police also have not provided a complete account of the movements and actions of everyone involved immediately before the shooting.

The corrected location is one of the details that emerged as investigators developed a clearer picture of the incident. Authorities initially directed attention to Clearwater Drive before determining through the investigation that the shooting happened on Amber Springs Drive.

No arrests had been announced by Thursday. Kelly said detectives would determine who fired during the incident and whether the evidence supports criminal charges against any of the people involved. Police have not identified a suspect or alleged that any specific participant committed a crime.

The investigation remains active, and Mesquite police said more information will be released as it becomes available. The department has not announced when additional findings or possible charging decisions will be made.
