Fairfax Traffic Stop Escalates to Shootout, Injuring Officers

FAIRFAX, VA – Two police officers are recovering from non-life-threatening injuries after a shooting incident during a traffic stop in Fairfax. Both officers are currently receiving treatment at a nearby hospital and are expected to make a full recovery. The situation unfolded on Majestic Lane, close to Route 50.

According to the Fairfax County Police Chief, the officers were fortunate to survive after being shot in their arm and elbow. The incident escalated when police stopped a speeding sedan with expired tags. The driver, described as immediately hostile, refused to identify himself and warned officers that he was armed.

The confrontation turned violent when the driver leaned back in his seat and opened fire on the officers. In response, a third officer returned fire, resulting in the driver’s death. The identity of the driver, a 36-year-old man from the local area, has not yet been disclosed.

The neighborhood, usually quiet, was shaken by the violence. Residents expressed their shock, noting that while smaller crimes occur, such a severe incident is rare. Witnesses, including a man from Waldorf who was in the vicinity, reported that the aftermath was chaotic, with some vehicles, including his, sustaining damage from the gunfire.

Police have stated that body camera footage of the incident will be made public within 30 days, providing further clarity on the events. Meanwhile, the investigation continues, with detectives collecting evidence and speaking to witnesses.
