Prescott, Arizona – In a dramatic and dangerous series of events that unfolded in Prescott on Wednesday afternoon, a 70-year-old man named James Crespo is now in custody facing serious charges. Authorities received information from the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office about Crespo, who was wanted on a felony warrant from Maricopa County for weapons misconduct. Known to have evaded law enforcement in the past, Crespo was believed to be armed and a threat to public safety.
Officers attempted to stop Crespo as he drove towards Prescott from the west on Thumb Butte Road. Despite their efforts, he refused to comply, prompting the use of spike strips to prevent him from reaching more densely populated areas. Shockingly, Crespo then brandished a blow torch from his vehicle window and proceeded to drive over the spike strips, heading towards town.
In a desperate attempt to evade capture, Crespo drove into a residential area off Thumb Butte Road, colliding with a Prescott police vehicle before being surrounded by YCSO vehicles. The tense standoff escalated when an explosion rocked Crespo’s vehicle, engulfing a YCSO deputy’s vehicle and the surrounding area in flames.
Following the explosion, Crespo emerged from his vehicle carrying a propane tank and a blow torch. Law enforcement officers were forced to use non-lethal force to apprehend him. Although Crespo sustained injuries in the altercation, no officers, deputies, or bystanders were harmed during the chaotic events.
Crespo was promptly taken into custody and transported to a hospital in the Phoenix area for medical treatment.
