Pasadena, California – A 63-year-old Pasadena resident, Art Leon Berian, faces charges related to over 150 unidentified explosions in the area of Allen Ave. and Washington Blvd. The Pasadena Police Department announced Berian’s arrest in connection with the blasts, many of which had gone unreported to authorities, and were discovered through ShotSpotter technology and neighborhood applications. The recent surge in explosions, with 14 incidents occurring in the past two weeks alone, prompted a joint investigation by the Pasadena Fire Department Arson Investigator and the Pasadena Police Department Robbery/Homicide Unit.
After identifying two vehicles linked to the explosions, both registered under the same owner, authorities utilized technology to pinpoint the suspect. Police were able to locate Berian when Robbery/Homicide Unit detectives, gathering video evidence of an explosion on May 16, witnessed a blast and observed Berian’s 2013 BMW arriving at the scene. Berian was promptly apprehended, and evidence connected to the incident was seized from his vehicle, as reported by law enforcement officials.
Fortunately, there have been no reported injuries resulting from any of the explosions thus far. Following Berian’s arrest, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office has filed three felony counts of PC18740 (Explosives with Intent to Injure or Intimidate) against him, setting bail at $1,500,000. Authorities urge anyone with information on these incidents to contact the Pasadena Police Department or report anonymously through “Crime Stoppers.”
