Explosions Near Vessel Prompt Investigation in Gulf of Aden: UK Agency

Aden, Yemen – A merchant vessel traveling through the Gulf of Aden off the coast of Yemen recently experienced two explosions in close proximity, according to the UK Maritime Trade Operations. The incident occurred south of the port city of Aden, and UK authorities have confirmed that both the vessel and its crew are safe as investigations into the explosions are ongoing.

Yemen’s Huthi rebels, who are known to be backed by Iran, have been responsible for numerous drone and missile attacks on ships in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden since November. They claim these attacks are in support of Palestinians during the conflict in Gaza.

In a bold move, the Huthis have threatened to expand their operations to target shipping bound for Israel in the Mediterranean Sea. In response to the Huthi attacks, the United States launched an initiative in December to protect shipping routes in the Red Sea, as major companies have been avoiding the area due to the security risks posed by the rebels.

Both the US and the UK have been conducting retaliatory strikes on Huthi targets in Yemen since January. These actions are part of efforts to deter further attacks and ensure the safety of vessels passing through the region.

Recently, the US military intercepted a drone launched by the Huthis over the Red Sea, citing it as a threat to coalition forces and merchant vessels in the area. Such incidents highlight the ongoing tensions and security challenges faced by ships navigating through volatile waters near Yemen.

As maritime security remains a top priority in the region, the international community continues to monitor and respond to threats posed by groups like the Huthis. Efforts are being made to safeguard trade routes and protect vessels from potential attacks, underscoring the importance of maintaining stability and security in key maritime areas.
