Explosions at Convenience Store Narrowly Avoid Disaster with Fast Evacuation

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Fire and EMS teams in Washington’s Anacostia neighborhood successfully evacuated dozens of people, including children, just 15 minutes before a reported gas leak caused a building to explode. The incident resulted in minor injuries to one person and damage to several nearby buildings.

The first responders arrived at the scene and swiftly evacuated 16 children from a neighboring daycare before the explosion occurred. Video footage from the first engine on the scene captured the moment of the second of two explosions. Following the initial blast, fire officials called for a second alarm to respond to the subsequent explosion.

The explosions completely destroyed a convenience store and caused significant damage to two other buildings in the area. Thankfully, due to the quick actions of the firefighters, a potentially devastating tragedy was averted. Mayor Muriel Bowser commended the fast and necessary decision-making of the firefighting teams in evacuating everyone on time.
