LIVINGSTON, La. — A boat explosion during the Tickfaw 200 event left a local man with critical burns, prompting an outpouring of community support as he begins his long road to recovery. Devear “Dee” Tureaud was assisting others with a newly restored motor when the incident occurred on Saturday night.
According to Tureaud, the incident unfolded suddenly as he attempted to start the engine. “I cranked it the second time, and then it just blew up—no warning at all,” he recounted. The blast took place while Tureaud was helping three friends—Dylan Fabre, Gaige Wilcoxon, and Seth Camallo—who were on board at the time.
Fabre described the explosion as anything but normal. “It wasn’t just a backfire; it was as if the fuel had built up, and when it detonated, it turned into a bomb.” Fortunately, the three men managed to escape relatively unscathed, but Tureaud suffered severe injuries, including first, second, and third-degree burns.
As he undergoes care for his wounds, Tureaud has already received skin grafts on his arms and is awaiting further treatment for his face. “They’re treating my injuries day by day, ensuring the healing process is monitored closely,” he said. The severity of his condition means Tureaud is unable to work, creating additional challenges for him and his family.
In light of the incident, Tureaud’s family has turned to crowdfunding for assistance. A GoFundMe page has been set up to help cover medical expenses and support daily living needs during his recovery. Tureaud’s wife, Eleshia, expressed her gratitude for the supportive community, stating, “It’s been exceptionally tough, but we are thankful for the kindness of so many.”
While he grapples with his injuries, Tureaud remains focused on the silver linings of the situation. “I’m grateful that no one else was hurt. This is not something anyone wants to experience,” he reflected.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers involved in water sports and the importance of safety precautions. As Tureaud faces the challenges ahead, he and his family are bolstered by the goodwill of their community and a collective hope for recovery.
