Explosion Shakes Austintown: Multiple Injuries Reported at Phoenix House Apartments

AUSTINTOWN, Ohio — An explosion at the Phoenix House apartments on Saturday resulted in several injuries and significant structural damage to the complex located at 850 North Meridian Road. The incident occurred around 12:30 p.m., and emergency responders quickly arrived to assist those affected.

Reports indicated that a strong odor of gas was present at the scene, prompting a swift response from emergency crews in nearby communities, including Austintown, Boardman, Canfield, Girard, Weathersfield, and Youngstown. Although officials did not immediately identify the cause of the blast, an investigation is underway.

Emergency personnel transported several residents to local hospitals, although the severity of their injuries remains under assessment. Fortunately, as of Saturday evening, there were no fatalities reported. Fire Capt. Fred Marcum of the Austintown Fire Department confirmed the ongoing efforts to evaluate the situation and assess the needs of those impacted.

In an effort to provide immediate support, several buses transported residents to Austintown Elementary School for medical evaluations and family reunifications. The Red Cross is actively collaborating with local authorities to secure housing and additional resources for those who may have been displaced by the explosion.

The Mahoning County Commissioners issued a public statement expressing their condolences and urging residents to avoid the area as emergency operations continue. They emphasized their commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of the community and those directly affected by the incident.

Additional support measures include relocating displaced residents to nearby facilities like the Austintown Elementary School and the Austintown Senior Center. Authorities are also coordinating with local animal welfare organizations to ensure the safety of pets affected by the explosion.

Witnesses described the impact of the blast as significant, with sections of the building’s outer walls being blown away. Emergency responders worked diligently to search for anyone who might be trapped or in need of assistance.
