SILVER SPRING, Md. — A propane tank explosion ignited a destructive fire at a residential property Sunday afternoon, leaving an elderly woman and her dog without a home. The incident unfolded on the 900 block of Helena Drive around 4:30 p.m., when a gas grill on the back porch exploded, rapidly spreading flames through the wooden structure.
Firefighters from the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service responded promptly, battling the blaze that quickly engulfed both floors of the two-story house. The intensity of the fire also posed risks to neighboring properties, damaging a nearby fence and melting the siding of an adjacent home.
Fortunately, the homeowner, an elderly woman, was able to escape unharmed with her dog. She declined medical treatment at the scene, though tragically, her cat was found deceased by the firefighting team.
Given the considerable heat generated by the fire, officials declared a second alarm, summoning additional resources to control the situation. A total of approximately 85 fire personnel participated in the efforts to extinguish the flames and secure the area, highlighting the fire’s severity.
