JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. — A home explosion Wednesday night left five individuals with life-threatening injuries in a quiet neighborhood, prompting significant community concern. The incident occurred just after 11:30 p.m. in the 900 block of Washington Way, where the devastation extended beyond the immediate blast, leaving pieces of the structure scattered around the exposed foundation.
Emergency responders rushed the injured parties to local hospitals to receive treatment for severe burns sustained in the explosion. As the investigation unfolds, authorities have stated there is currently no indication of foul play or malicious intent behind the incident.
Residents, like Benita Conn, have been left shaken by the event. Conn utilized a leaf blower to clear remnants of insulation and ashes from her mother’s porch, a stark reminder of the nearby disaster. She recognized the basketball court and a white Hyundai crushed in the driveway as belonging to her mother’s neighbor, the main resident of the destroyed home. Thankfully, she learned that he and his 5-year-old child were not in the house at the time of the explosion.
“I’m really worried about him,” Conn said, expressing her concern for the neighbor who had worked hard to maintain his home. “He’s a good kid, and I love him and his little boy. It’s going to be tough for him, but he’s got a lot of people praying for him.”
This is not the first tragedy to strike the area. In 2019, another explosion off Assembly Road claimed the life of a man and severely injured his wife. That incident was linked to a gas leak, raising concerns among members of the community about potential dangers in their neighborhood. Although the gas company, CenterPoint, has confirmed there are no leaks at this time, residents remain apprehensive.
City Council President Evan Stoner visited the scene Thursday evening and expressed his commitment to supporting the affected community. “I’m focused on talking to neighbors and checking in on everyone,” Stoner said. “This situation has caused serious trauma, and it’s crucial we come together as a community.”
Both Stoner and local police have emphasized the importance of dispelling rumors regarding the cause of the explosion, urging residents to wait for the official investigation to conclude. The Jeffersonville Fire Department continues to examine the site while residents grapple with the emotional and physical impacts of the explosion.
As the neighborhood seeks answers, the sense of uncertainty lingers, reminding residents of the fragility of safety in their everyday lives.
