Explosion Resulting in Injuries Leads to Pittsfield Teen’s Jail Time and Probation

Shawano, Wisconsin – In a courtroom in Shawano, a Pittsfield teenager faced sentencing for his involvement in a bonfire explosion in the Pulaski area that left 17 people injured. Samuel Armstrong, 18, received a six-month jail term and five years of probation for thirteen charges related to the incident. The sentencing hearing included emotional statements from victims and their families, as detailed in court records.

Armstrong’s probation conditions mandate strict adherence to sobriety, issuing apologies to victims, and prohibiting contact with explosives or burning materials. Violations could result in an additional six-month jail term. The community service requirement includes 200 hours dedicated to burn services.

The tragic incident occurred during a homecoming weekend bonfire where wooden pallets, tires, and a 55-gallon drum of diesel fuel were ignited. Attendees reported underage drinking and the use of the fuel mixture to keep the fire burning. Moments before 11 p.m., Armstrong and another teen threw the drum into the fire, causing a massive explosion.

Although the exact number of injured individuals remains unknown, 17 people sustained injuries, with seven requiring airlifting to a burn unit in Milwaukee. For many victims, recovery has been a long and arduous process, leaving lasting scars.

In a separate legal case, the second teenager involved, who was 16 at the time of the incident, faced charges in Brown County Juvenile Court. Meanwhile, Armstrong and others are defendants in multiple personal injury lawsuits stemming from the explosion. The outcomes of these cases are still pending.

As the community continues to grapple with the aftermath of the bonfire explosion, questions remain about accountability, safety measures, and the impact on those affected by the tragedy. Both teenagers involved have faced legal consequences for their roles in the incident, underscoring the importance of responsible behavior and caution around dangerous materials.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential consequences of reckless actions, highlighting the need for vigilance and adherence to safety protocols in all communal gatherings. The legal proceedings surrounding the bonfire explosion shed light on the complexities of seeking justice and accountability in the aftermath of a tragedy.
