PORT TOWNSEND, Wash. — A dramatic explosion aboard a 50-foot sailboat on Sunday afternoon resulted in serious injuries for two occupants and triggered a significant emergency response. The incident occurred in the Glen Cove neighborhood, just south of a local mill, drawing first responders from various agencies, including East Jefferson Fire Rescue.
Emergency crews received an urgent call about the explosion, relayed by Vessel Assist, which had communicated with the individuals on board after they had evacuated the vessel. The two injured individuals were later located in a dinghy near the boat along with their dog. The condition of the pet remains unclear.
Rescue operations transitioned quickly as the victims were transported to a nearby fuel dock at Boat Haven, where paramedics awaited their arrival. Both individuals suffered burns covering more than 20% of their bodies and were subsequently flown to the burn unit at Harborview Medical Center for specialized treatment.
The emergency response included East Jefferson Fire Rescue’s Marine 1, alongside a battalion chief and several emergency medical service units. The situation escalated, placing significant strain on local resources. This led to a “status-zero” framework, a term designating that all available emergency units from East Jefferson Fire Rescue were dispatched, leaving no personnel to respond to additional emergencies.
Fire officials noted that their units are frequently assigned to multiple emergency calls simultaneously, with a third of their responses resulting in such conditions. This incident prompted an immediate recall of off-duty and volunteer firefighters to ensure staffing at local fire stations during the crisis.
Additionally, Engine 91 from the U.S. Navy, stationed on Indian Island, was engaged in a separate emergency call in the Port Townsend area. Other regional agencies, including those from Quilcene, Kitsap, and Clallam counties, were notified to provide mutual aid but were ultimately not required for this particular incident.
As first responders continued to manage the situation, safety experts highlighted the importance of precautionary measures when engaging in maritime activities, particularly when operating larger vessels. Authorities are expected to launch an investigation into the cause of the explosion as they assess the broader implications for local sailors.
