Austin, Texas – The Austin Fire Department is currently investigating the cause of a devastating explosion that occurred in Northwest Austin on Sunday, leaving at least 24 homes damaged and six individuals injured. The incident took place just before noon, with reports of a two-story home being leveled to the ground in the 10400 block of Double Spur Loop.
Upon arrival at the scene, emergency crews discovered the aftermath of the explosion, with significant damage to neighboring properties and a vehicle fire that had collapsed as a result of the blast. The quick response from fire crews helped extinguish small spot fires within the debris, containing the situation as they treated the injured individuals.
As a result of the explosion, six people were treated in connection with the incident, with two individuals from the collapsed residence listed in critical condition, along with a third person from a neighboring house. Additionally, two firefighters sustained minor injuries during the response. Animal Control is also assisting officials in accounting for pets in the affected neighborhood.
Authorities have confirmed that at least 24 homes sustained damage from the explosion, with two deemed “uninhabitable.” The Red Cross has stepped in to provide assistance to those who have been displaced by the incident. Despite power outages in the area due to damaged power lines, electricity has since been restored to all homes except for those severely impacted by the explosion.
The cause of the explosion remains unknown as investigations continue. While Texas Gas Service has confirmed that the home did not have natural gas service, officials have noted the presence of propane tanks on the property. Speculations regarding a possible plane crash or law enforcement activity in the area have been debunked by officials, who are focused on determining the root cause of the explosion.
The explosion was reportedly heard and seen from miles away, with social media users sharing images of a large smoke cloud and describing a loud “boom.” The widespread impact of the explosion reached as far as Georgetown, underscoring the magnitude of the event and the community’s resilience in the face of adversity.
