Brian Lyn Davies was in his rented one-bedroom terrace house on Clydach Road when the explosion occurred on March 13, 2023. Claire Bennett, his neighbor, recounted the terrifying moment from her sofa, where she assumed a nearby car had collided with her home. Instead, she found herself engulfed in darkness and debris, trapped under fallen walls and ceilings.
“I remember waking up to chaos,” Bennett recalled, as she struggled to move and call for her son, who was upstairs at the time of the blast. A stranger’s voice reassured her as he freed her from the rubble. Bennett spent a week in the hospital recovering from her injuries, and both she and her son now contend with post-traumatic stress disorder stemming from the incident.
The inquest revealed that Bennett had detected a strong smell of gas in the weeks leading up to the explosion, which she believed was linked to maintenance work nearby. “I could smell it very strongly in the street,” she stated, emphasizing the need for vigilance regarding gas safety.
Jurors were shown unsettling CCTV footage capturing the moment of the explosion, as a postal van passed the house just before it was enveloped in a thick cloud of debris. The blast was so intense that neighbors initially mistook the sight for a different type of disaster entirely.
Davies’ son, Ricky Lyn Davies, described his father as a lively and active individual who took pride in his home and enjoyed spending time with his three grandchildren. “He was in good spirits leading up to his passing,” he added, underlining how profound the loss has been for the family.
The property in question was rented from a private landlord through a management company. Legal representation for Wales & West Utilities, the entity responsible for the gas network in Wales and parts of England, was present at the inquest. With ongoing investigations, the circumstances surrounding the explosion remain under careful scrutiny.
