Explosion Lawsuit Looms as State Probe of Copiah County Tragedy Ends

Barlow, Mississippi – Following a tragic propane explosion at a home in Copiah County in January 2024 that claimed the lives of four individuals, the Mississippi State Fire Marshal’s Office has concluded its investigation into the incident.

Among the victims were Loyd Star Attendance Center student and football player Toler Jordan, 14, and his cousin Houston “Bubba” Jordan, 18, who was a recent graduate of Reading Nook Academy and a football player at Brookhaven Academy. Also lost in the explosion were Calvin “Benjy” Jordan, father of Bubba and uncle to Toler, and his friend Jeremy Mitchell, 52, who succumbed to his injuries a few days later.

The State Fire Marshal’s Office has determined that the cause of the Copiah County explosion is classified as “undetermined,” citing the extensive damage that hindered pinpointing an exact cause. With the investigation now complete, officials anticipate the incident may lead to a civil case.

In the aftermath of the tragedy, a lawsuit has been filed against Hering Gas Company, alleging negligence in the inspection of the propane tank that ultimately exploded. Reports indicate that the tank was filled on a Saturday night and exploded the following Sunday afternoon while the Jordan family members were outside with Jeremy Mitchell and four women were inside the home.

The lawsuit contends that Hering Gas and its employees bear direct responsibility for the explosion and its tragic consequences, seeking accountability for the devastating loss of life. This legal action marks a pivotal development in the ongoing aftermath of the Copiah County propane explosion, shedding light on the need for heightened safety measures and accountability within the industry.

As the community mourns the loss of the four individuals, the legal proceedings are poised to provide answers and potentially prevent similar incidents in the future. The Copiah County explosion serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of proper safety protocols and regulatory oversight in handling volatile materials like propane.
