STERLING, Virginia – A tragic explosion in a Washington DC suburb resulted in the death of one firefighter and left nine others injured while they were investigating a gas leak at a home. The explosion also injured two civilians.
The firefighters had responded to a report of a gas smell at the home in Sterling, Virginia, and the explosion occurred around 30 minutes later, with the firefighters still inside the building. James Williams, assistant chief of operations for Loudon County Fire and Rescue, described the blast and fire at a news conference.
Tragically, one firefighter lost their life, while the others were taken to hospitals with injuries ranging from limited to severe. Williams reported that the house suffered “total devastation” and there was debris scattered into the street and neighboring homes, describing the scene as horrific.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation, according to Williams. The Sterling Volunteer Fire Company revealed that they had responded to a report of a gas leak prior to the blast. A neighbor, John Padgett, recounted smelling gas while walking his dog before the blast shook his home. He described the scene as resembling an inferno and noted the horror of the situation, likening it to something from a war zone.
