Explosion Injures Newlywed Couple in Bengaluru After Gas Leak Ignites at Their Home

BENGALURU, India — A newlywed couple suffered significant burn injuries early Sunday when a gas leak ignited an explosion in their rented home in Kondappa Layout, near Yelahanka.

Krishnaveni, 25, and Raju, 26, have been hospitalized at Victoria Hospital for treatment of their injuries. Both originally hail from Bagepalli in the Chikkaballapur district, and they had celebrated their marriage just three months prior. Raju is employed by a private firm in the area.

Authorities reported that the explosion occurred between 6 and 6:30 a.m. Preliminary investigations suggest that the couple was unaware of the gas leak. The event unfolded tragically when Krishnaveni either turned on a light or attempted to ignite the gas stove, igniting the built-up gas and triggering a fierce explosion. The violence of the blast resulted in damage to a portion of the home’s wall.

Emergency response teams, including police and fire brigade personnel, swiftly arrived at the scene to extinguish the flames that engulfed the area. A senior officer indicated that the gas cylinder itself remained intact despite the explosion. Yelahanka police have since registered a case of accidental fire, and an investigation is currently underway to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incident.

In a separate but related incident, a furniture store located in Canara Bank Colony, Moodalapalya, was the site of an accidental fire around midnight on Saturday. The fire ignited on the ground floor of a multi-story building but fortunately resulted in no casualties. However, two nearby trees were also affected by the flames. Firefighters promptly managed to control the blaze, and it has been reported that the store is owned by an individual named Murali.

Both incidents highlight the potential dangers associated with gas leaks and the importance of fire safety measures in residential and commercial settings. Authorities continue to emphasize the need for regular maintenance and monitoring of gas appliances to prevent such dangerous situations in the future.
