Ploče, Montenegro — A 45-year-old man has been detained following an explosion involving a scuba cylinder at a popular dive center, leaving a 14-year-old boy with severe injuries. The incident unfolded on August 24, 2025, at Ploče Beach, a known spot for diving enthusiasts.
Witnesses reported the explosion occurred unexpectedly while the boy was approximately 50 meters from the dive gear area. Shrapnel from the blast struck his wrist, inflicting serious damage. Emergency responders quickly transported him to a clinic in Kotor, located about 22 kilometers away, before transferring him to the specialist orthopedics unit at Risan Hospital. Unfortunately, doctors later had to amputate the child’s hand. His family, originally from Montenegro but visiting from abroad, stayed close during his medical treatment.
A second child, a Serbian holidaymaker, sustained minor injuries and received care at a medical facility in Budva. Fortunately, his wounds were described as superficial.
In the aftermath of the explosion, all diving operations at the facility have been halted. This center has been offering scuba and freediving services along with equipment rentals since 2011, making the incident particularly alarming for the local diving community.
Local authorities have only referred to the arrested man by the initials “MB” in media reports. The police confirmed they are conducting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the explosion, seeking to determine how such a tragic event transpired.
In a statement, the Police Directorate emphasized that they are working diligently to uncover the facts relating to the incident. They indicated that both police and emergency services are actively involved in assessing the situation and executing necessary follow-up actions based on their findings.
This explosion has raised safety concerns among local divers and visitors who frequent the area. The dive center, known for its longstanding presence, faces scrutiny as regulators investigate operational safety protocols. Beachgoers and diving enthusiasts are left wondering how such an accident could have occurred in a place often sought for recreation and adventure.
