Explosion at Hayes Cooper Elementary School Prompts Relocation to Delta State University for Classes

Merigold, Mississippi – Faculty and staff at Hayes Cooper Elementary School were forced to evacuate after an explosion injured two teachers, leading to a temporary relocation to Delta State University. The incident, still under investigation by the State Fire Marshal’s Office, occurred at 7:25 a.m. last Thursday.

Cleveland School District Superintendent, Dr. Lisa Bramuchi, swiftly implemented an emergency evacuation plan, ensuring the safety of students who were transported to the Merigold Community Storm Shelter. Meanwhile, two buses en route to the school parked at a local crawfish restaurant, awaiting the arrival of parents or guardians to pick up the pupils.

Delta State University extended a helping hand by providing a facility for the elementary students to continue their education in person. President Dr. Dan Ennis expressed his willingness to assist, emphasizing the university’s commitment to support the school during this challenging time.

Classes resumed for the Hayes Cooper Elementary pupils at DSU, with activities taking place in the college’s education building. The welcoming reception by the Delta community, including the football team and iconic mascots, helped ease the transition for the students back to school.

Hayes Cooper Elementary is expected to remain on DSU’s campus for the rest of the semester as investigations into the explosion continue. Sources suggest a gas leak may have caused the incident, although official confirmation is pending.

Superintendent Bramuchi acknowledged the ongoing recovery of the injured teachers in the hospital and expressed hope for their prompt return home. Plans for the summer and beyond are now being considered as the school navigates the aftermath of the explosion.
