Explosion at Dunlap Gas Station Controlled; All Individuals Safe After Fire Incident

DUNLAP, Iowa — A fire that ignited at a gas station and auto repair shop early Tuesday morning resulted in a brief explosion, but fortunately, all individuals inside the building were safely accounted for. Emergency crews responded to the incident shortly after it began around 9:20 a.m., and the fire was declared under control by 10:30 a.m.

The Harrison County Emergency Management Agency reported that four people were present in the building at the time. Initial concerns arose when it was thought that two individuals were unaccounted for, but all were located quickly and unharmed. Firefighters from six volunteer departments were dispatched to manage the situation.

According to local authorities, the fire was sparked when employees were attempting to ventilate a brake drum cleaner spill by using a fan. The fan created a spark that ignited the highly flammable substance. Two overhead doors were open at the time, which contributed to the rapid spread of the flames, providing additional oxygen to the fire.

In the aftermath, firefighters remained on site to ensure complete containment. Local businesses, including the Town and Country gas station and a nearby restaurant, stepped up to provide food and refreshments for the first responders as they worked at the scene.

This incident comes on the heels of a tragic plant explosion in Fremont, Nebraska, which resulted in three fatalities just a week prior, highlighting the urgent attention needed to ensure safety in industrial settings. Though the outcome in Dunlap was fortunate, it serves as a reminder of the potential hazards associated with flammable materials in workplaces.

Authorities continue to investigate the specifics leading to the ignition and subsequent explosion, emphasizing the need for improved safety protocols in environments that handle volatile substances. For now, Dunlap’s residents are relieved that no injuries were reported in the incident.
