Explosion at Bishkek Power Plant Traced to Coal Mill, Investigation Underway

Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan – An explosion at the Bishkek combined heat and power plant has been identified, according to the Ministry of Emergency Situations. The incident, which occurred at 3:00 am on February 2, caused significant damage to the plant.

Deputy Minister of Emergency Situations Urmat Shamyrkanov described the explosion as powerful, with glass shards and roof fragments scattered over a large area. The roof, measuring 650-680 meters, was completely torn apart by the force of the explosion.

The source of the explosion was identified by the Fire Service as the mill near the 14th boiler, which is used to grind coal and feed it directly into the boiler. The investigation to determine the cause of the explosion is currently underway, with a criminal probe launched by the prosecutor’s office of Bishkek.

Efforts to restore the plant are ongoing, with over 1,000 people involved in the process. The extent of the damage and the impact on the surrounding area is still being assessed.
