HERMISTON, Oregon – In a somber tribute, the Columbia Development Authority and the Oregon Military Department joined hands to commemorate the 80th Anniversary of the tragic 1944 munitions explosion at the former Umatilla Army Ordnance Depot. Six lives were lost in the devastating incident, a sacrifice remembered by State Rep. Greg Smith who honored the fallen civilians for their service to the nation.
The ceremony, held on March 21, 2024, marked the exact moment of the accidental explosion that took place inside one of the storage igloos, claiming the lives of Harry D. Sever, Hiram Cook, Kenneth L. Fraser, William Sanders, Alice Wolgamott, and Lance Stultz. As attendees paid their respects, a tribal prayer by Raymond Huesties invoked the historical significance of the area and the enduring presence of the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation.
With heartfelt intentions, Oregon National Guard Chaplain (Col.) Jacob Scott led a prayer for the fallen, underscoring their contribution to the defense of America and the world during World War II. The presence of Oregon National Guard members, the playing of taps, and the posting of a wreath at the site of the explosion added a poignant touch to the memorial service, allowing for a moment of reflection and remembrance.
The Umatilla Army Ordnance Depot, later renamed the U.S. Army Umatilla Chemical Depot, played a pivotal role in storing chemical munitions during the war. Despite its closure in 1988 and subsequent decommissioning process, the memory of the tragic explosion in 1944 remains etched in the region’s history. State Sen. Bill Hansell, reflecting on the solemn occasion, highlighted the personal connection to the site, emphasizing the need to honor and recognize the sacrifices made by those who lost their lives in service.
In renaming the installation as the Raymond F. Rees Training Center, the state pays homage to its military legacy while ensuring the preservation of its history.
