Explosion and Fire at Watertown Property Sends Owner to Hospital

WATERTOWN, New York – A fiery incident drew the attention of Watertown’s Fire Department to 222 East Main Street over the weekend. Reports of an explosion and subsequent fire prompted an urgent response from firefighters just after 5:30 pm Saturday.

Upon arrival, Chief Matt Timerman and his team discovered flames engulfing an unattached garage at the scene. Concerned bystanders informed the firefighters that an individual was believed to be trapped inside the burning structure.

Efforts to access the garage were swiftly executed, leading to the discovery of the property owner, John Babcock, within. Fire department personnel, along with Guilfoyle EMS responders, provided immediate medical assistance to Babcock.

Following initial treatment, Babcock was swiftly airlifted to SUNY Upstate Medical Center for further medical care. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries among the responding firefighters.
