Explosion aftermath leads to demolition of historic Realty Tower in Youngstown

Youngstown, Ohio – After a tragic explosion at the historic Realty Tower building, officials have announced plans for its demolition.

The decision to tear down the building came after concerns arose regarding the engineers’ ability to stabilize the structure. Mayor Jamael Tito Brown stated that the owners, engineers, and city officials jointly agreed that demolition was the safest course of action.

Demolition of the Realty Tower is set to commence this week under the guidance of the building’s owners. While the loss of such a prominent downtown building is regrettable, Mayor Brown emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety of residents and reopening businesses in the area.

The explosion, which resulted in the death of Chase Bank employee Akil Drake, occurred in the building’s basement. Despite the efforts of first responders, Drake’s body was discovered later that evening.

The National Transportation Safety Board’s pipeline and hazardous materials division is leading the investigation into the explosion. These investigations typically focus on incidents involving the transportation of natural gas and other hazardous liquids through pipelines, especially in cases of fatalities or significant property damage.

The preliminary report from the NTSB is expected within a few weeks, with the final report potentially taking up to two years to complete. This report will outline the findings of the investigation and any safety recommendations deemed necessary by NTSB officials.

In a statement, JPMorgan Chase expressed their condolences for the loss of Akil Drake, recognizing him as a valued member of their team. Drake, a dedicated community member and Youngstown State University graduate, was known for his commitment to volunteer work and making a positive impact in the city.

As the community mourns the loss of Akil Drake, investigations into the explosion will continue, shedding light on the circumstances surrounding this tragic event.
