The shooting killed Dysart High School student Ashtin Evans and injured another juvenile.
EL MIRAGE, Ariz. — Detectives arrested a 17-year-old boy two days after gunfire in an El Mirage neighborhood killed Ashtin Evans, a 17-year-old Dysart High School student, police said.
The arrest moved the case from a search for a gunman to a homicide prosecution. Police said Schiloh Albin Niyibizi of Surprise was booked into the Maricopa County Jail on charges including second-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder. Several other felony and misdemeanor counts were also connected to the shooting.
The shooting was reported shortly after 8 p.m. Monday near El Mirage and Thunderbird roads. Officers responding to Dreyfus Drive found Evans with serious gunshot wounds. He was taken to a hospital and later died. By Tuesday morning, police said they had learned another juvenile who had been at the scene was being treated at a local hospital and was expected to survive.
El Mirage Police Chief Paul Marzocca said officers were helped by a gunshot detection system and by people in the neighborhood who called for help or shared information. The Arizona Department of Public Safety also helped process evidence. Marzocca said the community response helped detectives gather information needed for the arrest.
Police have not released a motive. They also have not said how many shots were fired, what type of weapon was used or whether any additional arrests are possible. Investigators said Niyibizi was also shot, but they did not describe the injury or say when he was treated.
Evans’ death brought classmates, relatives and friends to Buena Vida Park for a Tuesday vigil near the shooting scene. Those who gathered remembered him as a football player and a member of a large family. The park sits only blocks from the residential area where police and first responders had worked the night before.
Authorities said more details may be released early this week. Until then, the case remains active as detectives prepare reports for court review.
