Investigators say the suspect and victim were involved in a family dispute before the shooting.
RALEIGH, N.C. — A woman has been arrested after police say she shot her uncle during an Easter Sunday incident in Raleigh, leaving the man hospitalized and prompting an ongoing investigation into what led to the violence.
Authorities said the case centers on a domestic conflict that unfolded inside a home during a family gathering. The shooting has raised questions about how quickly disputes can escalate, particularly during high-stress or emotionally charged situations involving relatives.
Police responded to reports of gunfire at a residence and found an adult male suffering from a gunshot wound. Emergency personnel treated the victim at the scene before taking him to a nearby hospital. Officials have not disclosed the severity of his injuries.
According to investigators, the suspect is the victim’s niece. She was detained shortly after officers arrived and has been identified as the person responsible for the shooting. Police have not detailed whether the weapon used was recovered at the scene.
Witnesses told officers that an argument broke out before the gunfire. While the exact cause of the dispute remains unclear, investigators are examining whether the confrontation had been building prior to the holiday gathering or if it erupted suddenly.
Residents in the surrounding neighborhood described a sudden disruption to an otherwise peaceful day. Some reported hearing a loud noise before seeing emergency vehicles arrive. “It was shocking,” one resident said, adding that the street is usually quiet and family-oriented.
Law enforcement officials have not yet confirmed the specific charges the suspect may face. They said the case will be reviewed in coordination with prosecutors, and formal charges could be announced after additional evidence is evaluated.
Cases involving family members often present challenges for investigators, including conflicting accounts and complex personal histories. Authorities said they are interviewing witnesses and reviewing physical evidence to piece together what happened inside the home.
Officials also indicated that additional details, including possible court dates and the suspect’s custody status, will be released once they are confirmed. The victim’s recovery and medical condition may also play a role in how the case proceeds.
The investigation remains active, with police urging anyone with information to come forward as they work to establish a complete account of the events.
