Early-Morning Crash Leads to Serious Stabbing Charge in Elizabeth City

Officers found Jeremy Lee unconscious after a reported crash, but the investigation soon shifted to injuries police said came from a stabbing.

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. — A call about an early-morning vehicle crash turned into a stabbing investigation after Elizabeth City police found a driver unconscious and later determined he had suffered multiple stab wounds, according to police accounts released after the incident.

Officers responded at about 5:10 a.m. Nov. 1 to a reported motor vehicle collision near Halstead Boulevard Extended and Thunder Road. Police identified the driver as Jeremy Lee. Officers found him unconscious, breathing irregularly and suffering from apparent injuries, and they began life-saving measures at the scene.

Lee was taken first to Sentara Albemarle Medical Center and later airlifted to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital for additional treatment. Police said further investigation, including information from emergency medical personnel, established that Lee had suffered multiple stab wounds. Authorities have not publicly released an updated condition for Lee.

The discovery changed the focus of the case from the reported collision to what investigators described as an assault. Detectives conducted interviews, followed up on information and collected evidence as they worked to determine where the stabbing occurred and who was responsible, according to the police account.

Investigators identified 38-year-old Stevette Lanelle Skinner as the person they allege was responsible for the stabbing. Police arrested Skinner and charged her with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury. The charge is an allegation, and the available reports do not establish that Skinner has been convicted in connection with the case.

Skinner was taken to the Albemarle District Jail and was being held without bond in reports released after her arrest. Her first appearance in Pasquotank County District Court was Nov. 2. No later court disposition or change in her custody status was confirmed in the reporting reviewed for this article.

The publicly released accounts leave several details unresolved. Police have not disclosed what they believe led to the stabbing, the relationship between Lee and Skinner, or the precise location where investigators believe the assault occurred. Authorities also have not released a detailed chronology explaining what happened between the alleged stabbing and the crash call.

The case remains under investigation. Police have not announced additional charges or arrests, and no verified public update reviewed through Nov. 6 provided further information about Lee’s medical condition or the circumstances surrounding the alleged assault.
