Drive-by Shooting Suspects Plead Guilty in La Jolla Party Tragedy

San Diego, California – Two men involved in a drive-by shooting at a house party in La Jolla, which resulted in the death of a young woman and injury to three others, have entered guilty pleas on charges of voluntary manslaughter and other offenses. Odyssey Sellers Carrillo, aged 23, and Malik Joshua Campbell, aged 24, were apprehended in connection with the shooting incident that took place on June 23, 2019, leading to the tragic death of 20-year-old Nina Silver. The fatal shooting occurred in the early hours of the morning on Cuvier Street, where Silver was hit while standing in an alley.

Authorities have asserted that the shooting incident was gang-related, and Silver was not the intended target. Originally facing murder charges and scheduled for trial, Carrillo and Campbell opted to plead guilty to reduced charges instead. The sentencing for both individuals is set for July, with Carrillo potentially facing a 35-year prison term and Campbell facing 24 years, as indicated by the San Diego County district attorney’s office.

According to the San Diego police, the shooting took place when a person from a sedan traveling north in the alley fired multiple shots at the victims. Carrillo, identified as the shooter by prosecutors, was arrested in July 2019 following a high-speed police chase, while Campbell was taken into custody two months later. Carrillo’s guilty pleas included charges of attempted murder, manslaughter, and assault with a semiautomatic firearm, while Campbell admitted to three counts of assault.

The tragic events that unfolded at the La Jolla house party serve as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of gun violence in communities. The guilty pleas entered by Carrillo and Campbell reflect a degree of accountability for their actions that led to the loss of a young life and the injury of others that night. As the legal process continues towards sentencing, the community grapples with the aftermath of the senseless act that forever altered the lives of those involved.
