Drive-By Shooting Defendants Plead Guilty to Voluntary Manslaughter in La Jolla Case

SAN DIEGO, California – In a tragic turn of events, two men have pleaded guilty to charges related to a drive-by shooting at a house party in La Jolla. The incident resulted in the death of 20-year-old Nina Silver and left three others injured. Odyssey Sellers Carrillo, 23, and Malik Joshua Campbell, 24, were arrested for their involvement in the shooting that took place on June 23, 2019.

Authorities believe that the shooting, which occurred in the early hours of the morning, was driven by gang-related motives and that Silver was not the intended target. Carrillo, alleged to be the shooter, and Campbell were set to go to trial on murder charges this week but decided to plead guilty to voluntary manslaughter and other charges.

The sentencing for the two defendants is scheduled for July. Carrillo is expected to receive a 35-year prison term, while Campbell is facing a 24-year sentence. The District Attorney’s Office provided these details following the guilty pleas.

According to San Diego police, the shooting took place when a light-colored sedan drove by an alley and fired multiple rounds at the victims, including a football player preparing for the upcoming season at Riverside Community College. Carrillo was apprehended in July 2019 after a high-speed police chase, while Campbell was taken into custody two months later.

In addition to the manslaughter charges, Carrillo pleaded guilty to attempted murder and assault with a semi-automatic firearm. Campbell, on the other hand, admitted to three assault charges. The community continues to mourn the loss of Silver and support the other victims as they recover from their injuries.
