Detention Ordered for Two Men in Portland Attempted Murder Case Amid Public Safety Fears

PORTLAND, Oregon — A court has ordered two of the three men charged in a brutal attack on a TriMet bus passenger earlier this month to be held without bail, citing serious public safety concerns. The ruling came during a preventive detention hearing on Friday.

The incident occurred on October 15, when the three men attempted to board a bus. Tensions escalated after one of the suspects was smoking, prompting a confrontation with the victim, who was already on the bus. According to prosecutors, this dispute led to a violent assault that left the victim severely injured.

In court, prosecutors presented graphic video evidence depicting what was characterized as a “brutal three-on-one beat down.” This footage reportedly showed the victim enduring a sustained physical attack, raising alarm about the risks posed by the defendants to the community.

Defendants Greffy Tom and Audric Yesiki attended the hearing with legal counsel and sought conditional release. However, their request was denied after Deputy District Attorney Julian Samuels argued for continued detention, emphasizing the dangers they pose. “The victim nearly lost his life,” Samuels said. “There’s no justification for placing anyone else in the community at risk.”

A detective with the Portland Police Bureau testified that the victim sustained multiple fractures and other significant injuries. Officials have yet to provide an update on his medical condition, leaving uncertainty surrounding his recovery.

The third suspect, Terson Tom, is expected to face a similar bail hearing next week unless he chooses not to seek release. Authorities are pursuing all necessary legal actions to address the severity of the charges and ensure community safety.
