SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The family of Glen Brooks is still reeling from his sudden and tragic death after a failed robbery attempt at a gas station. A prayer vigil was held in his memory, where family and friends shared their memories of Brooks.
South Bend Police reported that Brooks attempted to rob a gas station with a handgun, leading to a physical struggle with the clerk. A bystander, witnessing the situation, shot at Brooks, causing him to flee and ultimately collapse and die near the gas station.
The Saint Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office ruled the shooting as justifiable homicide, meaning the citizen who fired the fatal shot will not face criminal charges. Indiana Code supports this decision, stating that the use of deadly force is justified when there is a reasonable fear of imminent death or serious bodily injury.
Although Brooks made a mistake that night, his family remembers him as a loving and helpful person. They are seeking closure and have requested to see the surveillance video capturing his final moments alive.
