Deli-Meat Listeria Outbreak Strikes North Carolina, CDC Investigates Origin

North Carolina – A recent multi-state outbreak of Listeria, potentially linked to deli meat consumption, has struck several individuals across the country. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced that one person from North Carolina has fallen ill due to this outbreak, highlighting the dangers associated with consuming certain deli meats.

According to the CDC, individuals affected by this outbreak reported consuming deli-sliced meats prior to experiencing illness. The outbreak has impacted 28 people in total across 12 states, resulting in hospitalizations for all individuals affected. Tragically, two people have died as a result of this outbreak, one in Illinois and another in New Jersey.

The CDC’s investigation revealed that many of the affected individuals had consumed deli-sliced turkey and liverwurst from various supermarkets and grocery store delis. Despite efforts to identify the specific source of the outbreak, the CDC has yet to pinpoint the exact meat responsible for the illnesses.

Data collection for this outbreak occurred between May 29 and July 5, shedding light on the potential timeframe of exposure. The CDC also expressed concern that the actual number of affected individuals could be higher than reported, indicating the widespread impact of this Listeria outbreak.

Individuals who are pregnant, elderly (65 or older), or have compromised immune systems are advised to avoid consuming deli counter meats unless they are reheated to an internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit. Additionally, thorough cleaning of refrigerators, containers, and surfaces that may have come into contact with deli meat is recommended to prevent further spread of Listeria.

Symptoms of Listeria infection can include fever, muscle aches, fatigue, headaches, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, or seizures. Given the severity of these symptoms, it is crucial for individuals to be vigilant and seek medical attention if they experience any of these signs after consuming deli meats.
