Deathbed confession solves 24-year-old cold case in West Virginia

Beckley, West Virginia – A stunning revelation emerged as Larry Webb, an 82-year-old West Virginia man, made a deathbed confession to the brutal murders of a mother and her 10-year-old daughter nearly 24 years ago. Webb confessed to shooting and killing Susan Carter, 41, and her daughter Natasha “Alex” Carter in August 2000 before burying their bodies in a shallow grave on his property.

The bodies of Susan and Alex Carter were discovered on Webb’s Beckley property shortly after his death at the Mount Olive Correctional Complex in Fayette County. This grim discovery brought closure to a cold case that had remained unsolved for decades, marking what police described as a “poetic ending” to the tragic story.

According to investigators, Webb’s confession revealed a chilling sequence of events. After an argument over money with Susan Carter, who was residing in his home with her daughter, Webb fatally shot her. Webb, believing that Susan had taken his money, then proceeded to end her life. Following the murder of Susan, Webb acknowledged that he had irreversibly ruined his life. To eliminate any witnesses, he also shot and killed little Alex.

Authorities shared that Webb stored the bodies in the basement of his home after the murders, later burying them in the woods on his property. Despite being indicted for Alex’s death in October 2023, Webb’s full confession came only on his deathbed in April, shedding light on the long-unsolved case.

Webb’s detailed account of the events leading to the murders, including the argument over money and the subsequent violent acts, provided a chilling insight into the tragic incident. Investigators, who had reexamined the case in 2021, uncovered crucial evidence in Webb’s home, including a bullet with DNA from the 10-year-old victim embedded in the wall of Alex’s bedroom.

Rick Lafferty, Alex’s father involved in a custody battle with Susan at the time of her death, expressed gratitude to investigators for finally resolving the case. Lafferty’s emotional response captured the bittersweet nature of finally bringing closure to a decades-old mystery.

With Webb’s deathbed confession, the long-awaited answers to the murders of Susan and Alex Carter have been revealed, providing a sense of closure to the heartbreaking case that had weighed on the community for over two decades.
