Deadly Shooting Outside Mayfield Heights Restaurant Leaves 3 Detained

Authorities detained three people and said no suspects were believed to be outstanding as the investigation continued into Saturday.

MAYFIELD HEIGHTS, Ohio — The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is assisting Mayfield Heights police with an investigation into a fatal shooting outside a Mayfield Road restaurant, where three people were detained and authorities said the immediate threat to the public had ended.

The investigation began after officers were dispatched at about 4:04 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2, to reports of shots fired in the parking lot of Piada Italian Street Food. Police found an adult man suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to Cleveland Clinic Hillcrest Hospital and later died, police said.

Authorities had not released the man’s identity by Saturday. Police also had not identified the three detained people or said whether any of them had been formally arrested or charged. Investigators said they believed the three were involved in the incident, but the exact roles of those detained had not been made public.

The arrival of state investigators added resources to a crime scene that remained active for hours after the shooting. Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation agents arrived before 6 p.m., while detectives photographed evidence markers and continued examining the parking lot. A drone also was used over the scene as investigators worked in and around the commercial property.

Authorities had not announced what evidence had been collected or whether a firearm had been recovered. News crews at the scene observed what appeared to be a bullet hole in the passenger-side window of a vehicle. Employees at a business across Mayfield Road also reported that a bullet had struck their building. Police had not released findings tying specific evidence to any individual.

Emergency calls provided some of the earliest accounts of the shooting. Callers reported hearing several gunshots and seeing a person fall in the parking lot. Those statements helped describe the immediate scene but did not answer the central questions facing investigators, including who fired the fatal shot, what prompted the gunfire and how the people detained were connected to what happened.

The shooting also brought a temporary shutdown at the restaurant as police controlled access to the parking lot. Managers said the location would remain closed Friday night and planned to reopen Saturday. The investigation drew attention along Mayfield Road, a busy commercial corridor where neighboring workers said the violence was unexpected.

Police said Friday that they believed there were no outstanding suspects and no ongoing danger to the public. The statement narrowed concerns about an immediate threat while leaving the larger criminal investigation unresolved. Authorities had not publicly announced a motive or provided a detailed sequence of events leading to the gunfire.

The case remained under investigation Saturday by Mayfield Heights police with assistance from the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation. Officials had not announced charges or released the names of those detained, and additional findings were expected to depend on the continuing review of evidence and witness information.
