Eastbound traffic was halted as officers investigated a fatal shooting near Granbury Road in southwest Fort Worth.
FORT WORTH, Texas — A deadly shooting brought eastbound Interstate 20 traffic to a halt in southwest Fort Worth during Thursday morning’s commute as police closed the highway to investigate the killing of a woman in an apparent road-rage encounter.
The closure affected eastbound I-20 near Trail Lake Drive, Granbury Road and the Hulen Mall area after police were called to the highway Thursday morning. Officers gathered evidence on the interstate while traffic backed up and drivers approaching the investigation were diverted from the affected lanes.
Fort Worth police said the underlying shooting occurred about 6:30 a.m. in the 3700 block of I-20. Witnesses told officers that a woman and another driver had been traveling eastbound before an apparent road-rage situation developed between them.
Police spokesperson Cynthia Wood said the other driver pulled alongside the woman’s vehicle and fired at it. The woman was struck and died at the scene. The shooter continued away from the area before officers arrived, according to police.
The highway became an active crime scene as investigators worked across the eastbound lanes. The closure came during one of the busiest travel periods of the day on a major interstate serving southwest Fort Worth and nearby communities, adding significant delays around the Granbury Road interchange.
Authorities had not said Thursday morning how long the investigation would keep the affected portion of the interstate closed. Police also had not released a description of the suspected shooter or the vehicle that left the scene, limiting the information available about who investigators were seeking.
The woman’s identity had not been made public. The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office was expected to release her name after notification requirements were completed. Investigators also had not publicly detailed what led to the encounter between the two vehicles beyond calling it an apparent road-rage incident.
Police had not announced an arrest as the investigation continued. Authorities asked anyone who witnessed the shooting or had information about the incident to contact Fort Worth police at 817-392-4330. Anonymous information can be provided through Tarrant County Crime Stoppers.
