Deadly Rainy Day Crashes in Brazos Valley Linked to Hydroplaning and Speed, Says DPS

Brenham, Texas – Deadly crashes in the Brazos Valley during Monday’s rainfall have been attributed to dangerous driving conditions, according to DPS troopers. Both crashes were the result of driving too fast for the wet roads and hydroplaning.

One of the crashes resulted in the death of 59-year-old Anita Goodrich of Brenham, who was driving an SUV that crossed into westbound lanes and was struck by a semi on Highway 290 and Sunset Road. An unnamed passenger also died in the crash. The driver of the semi sustained minor injuries and was taken to a Brenham hospital for treatment.

In Grimes County, 26-year-old Stephen Oderinde of Spring died after his car struck a concrete culvert, overturned, and became submerged in water on Highway 249.

Department of Public Safety Sgt. Justin Ruiz suggested that worn out tires and speeding on rain-covered highways were contributing factors to the deadly crashes. He also advised drivers to stay informed on road and weather conditions, and to refrain from using cruise control and driving through flooded highways.

The deadly crashes serve as a sobering reminder of the potential dangers of driving in hazardous weather conditions. It is crucial for drivers to exercise caution and adapt their driving habits to ensure the safety of themselves and others on the road.
