Northbound traffic backed up for miles near the Norwood Lateral as police investigated a shooting and crash that killed one man.
CINCINNATI, Ohio — A fatal shooting and crash shut down northbound Interstate 71 near the Norwood Lateral for hours late Saturday and early Sunday, stranding motorists as Cincinnati police investigated the death of a 19-year-old man.
The traffic disruption began after officers responded to a reported shooting around 11 p.m. near the 8.0 mile marker. Police found a Nissan Altima that had been involved in a crash with three young men inside. Amarion Waver, 19, was pronounced dead at the scene. Two other men were taken to University of Cincinnati Medical Center.
As officers secured the interstate for the investigation, northbound traffic began building shortly after 11:30 p.m. The delay eventually stretched for miles. Some motorists remained caught in the backup until the early morning hours as police crime scene personnel and transportation officials worked along the highway.
The closure affected drivers traveling through the Cincinnati area during a busy Saturday night. Video from the backup showed the unusual effects of the prolonged shutdown, including motorists attempting to leave the stopped traffic and Metro passengers getting off a bus and walking along the interstate.
Transportation information indicated the delay had cleared by about 5:05 a.m. Sunday. Northbound I-71 later reopened, ending a closure that had continued for several hours while investigators processed the scene.
The highway disruption stemmed from a serious criminal investigation. Police said an 18-year-old man found at the scene had life-threatening injuries, including a gunshot wound. A second 19-year-old man suffered injuries described as not life-threatening. Their names were not released.
Authorities had not publicly explained the exact sequence linking the reported shooting and the crash. Officers were dispatched for a shooting and found the Altima after a crash, but police had not said what caused the vehicle to crash or whether another vehicle was involved in the events surrounding the gunfire.
Police also had not announced a suspect, identified a possible motive or said whether investigators believed the shooting was targeted. The lack of those details left major questions unresolved even after the interstate reopened and normal traffic resumed.
The Cincinnati Police Department’s Homicide Unit continued investigating the case. The highway was open again, but detectives had not announced an arrest or released a fuller account of what led to the fatal incident.
