Deadly Domestic Shooting Leaves Center Line Woman Dead, Husband in Custody

Police said officers found a 38-year-old woman with a single gunshot wound on Sterling Street.

CENTER LINE, Mich. — A 39-year-old man was taken into custody Tuesday after police said he fatally shot his wife at a home in the 7500 block of Sterling Street, where officers found the 38-year-old victim with a single gunshot wound around 5:30 p.m.

The shooting drew a fast and widening police response in this Macomb County city as investigators worked to secure the scene, identify the suspect and track his movements after the gunfire. Authorities said officers tried life-saving measures, but the woman died at the scene. By late Tuesday, police said the victim’s husband had been arrested, shifting the case from an active search to a homicide investigation with many key questions still unanswered, including what led to the shooting and whether charges had yet been filed.

Police said the first calls came in around 5:30 p.m. Tue., March 17, from the 7500 block of Sterling Street in Center Line. When officers arrived, they found the woman critically wounded. Officials said she had been shot once. Emergency efforts began immediately, but she was pronounced dead at the scene. As officers sorted through the first wave of evidence, investigators identified the victim’s husband as the possible shooter. Police then began searching for the 39-year-old man while locking down the immediate area and interviewing people who might have seen or heard what happened in the minutes before the gunfire.

Early accounts from police and local television reports pointed to a domestic dispute before the shooting. CBS Detroit reported that investigators said a preliminary investigation found an argument had taken place. FOX 2 Detroit reported that officers were working at two locations Tuesday night, with one scene near Van Dyke and Sterling and another in the 10000 block of Wainwright. That second location became part of the search as officers canvassed around townhouses and other nearby properties. Warren police also assisted, according to FOX 2. Police said the husband had fled after the shooting, but he was captured about 30 minutes after the 911 call. Reports differed slightly on the exact arrest point, with coverage placing it near 10 Mile Road and Wainwright or near 10 Mile and Van Dyke.

What remains unknown is nearly as important as what police have already confirmed. Authorities have not publicly released the names of either the woman or the man in custody. Police also have not said what weapon was used beyond describing the victim’s injury as a gunshot wound. No court record or charging announcement was included in the early public reports, and investigators had not publicly described any prior police contacts at the home. It was also not clear by Wednesday whether any children or other relatives were inside the residence when the shooting happened. Those unanswered details are likely to shape both the criminal case and the wider account of what happened in the home on Sterling Street.

The known timeline is short but stark. Police said the shooting happened in late afternoon in a residential block, bringing officers, emergency crews and later assisting departments into a neighborhood lined with homes. Within minutes, the case moved from emergency medical response to a search for a fleeing suspect. Within about a half-hour, police said, the husband was in custody. That quick arrest may narrow one part of the investigation, but it does not close the case. Investigators still have to process the scene, test physical evidence, interview witnesses and relatives, and present findings to prosecutors for a charging decision. Any arraignment, if charges are authorized, would likely be the next major public step.

The scene Tuesday night reflected both urgency and confusion as officers worked between the shooting site and the area where the suspect was found. Police have not described any statement from the man in custody, and no attorney information was publicly available in the initial reports. Center Line police said only that the husband was a possible shooter before he was taken into custody. Local coverage stayed close to those verified facts as the investigation unfolded. With the victim dead at the scene and the suspect in custody before night’s end, the central facts of the case came into focus quickly, even as the motive and many personal details remained unclear.

The case remained under investigation as of Wednesday, with the next public milestone likely to be a charging decision or court appearance once police present their findings to prosecutors.
